While temperatures across Italy are dropping, a warm atmosphere arrives from the West and warms Liguria for a week.
It's the Sanremo Music Festival, the biggest Italian singing competition, which highlights and celebrates Italian music. This year will be broadcasted live from Tuesday 1st to Saturday 5th February on RAI 1.
The world-renowned Italian music festival was founded in 1951, and since then, for more than 70 years, it has embedded itself in the memories of all Italians.
It's a fixed appointment that the nation has with its people. It's a deal made with music that leads to a nationwide celebration of the history of Italian culture.
It is a singing competition where Italian artists bring unreleased songs trying to win the contest. But in reality, it's much more than that; it's the scenery, the costumes, the fashion, and the coast-to-coast discussion on everything that occurs. Of course, everyone talks about what happens behind the scenes or on the theatre's stage, the Ariston, that has hosted "La Kermesse" for many years.
Thousands of journalists rush to Sanremo to have first-hand access to the music and to be able to interview the singers. In addition, people pour into the city's streets, hoping to meet their favorite artists in person.
Sanremo's music festival is not just a national showcase; as for its history, multiple international artists have graced the Ariston theatre with their presence and performances: Madonna, the U2, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, the Depeche Mode, Paul McCartney, George Harrison from the Beatles, the Dire Straits, Sting, Duran Duran, Oasis, Eminem, and many more.
However, negative opinions are common, as some people believe that the whole event is a giant media frenzy and have a hard time not being snobby. But then, most of the time, they find themselves at a bar surrounded by people only discussing Sanremo or by their partners who are continuously singing the chorus from their favorite song.
It's easier just to surrender to Sanremo, let the overwhelming wave of emotions and music take over, and enjoy this unique experience that can divert the attention from problems and focus it into something beautiful.
And this is the true beauty of music. In a challenging moment for Italy, where everything is uncertain, and the future is unclear, being able to put down the mask for a couple of minutes, and sing a stupid song as loudly as possible, could have the ability to give everyone a couple of moments of simple joy.

Il Festival di Sanremo: un'autentica tradizione italiana
Mentre il freddo cala su quasi tutte le regioni d’italia, un vento caldo, ogni anno, arriva da ovest e scalda la Liguria per una settimana.
È il festival di Sanremo, senza dubbio la più grande manifestazione canora che celebra la canzone italiana. Quest'anno sarà trasmesso in diretta da martedì 1 a sabato 5 febbraio su RAI 1.
Il Festival della canzone italiana nasce nel 1951 e da allora, per oltre settant’anni, continua la sua storia nella memoria di tutti gli italiani.
È un appuntamento fisso che il paese ha con il suo popolo, un patto fatto con la musica, una convenzione popolare, uno tzunami mediatico, una festa.
E' una vera e propria competizione canora dove i cantanti italiani portano un pezzo inedito e provano la vincere la manifestazione. Ma in pratica è molto altro. È costume, è moda, è un gran chiacchierare su qualsiasi cosa succede dietro le quinte e sopra il famoso palco dell'Ariston, che da molti anni ospita la Kermesse.
Migliaia di giornalisti si spostano a Sanremo per documentare e raccontare la musica e intervistare i cantanti. La gente si riversa nelle strade della cittadina di Sanremo nella speranza di incontrare e vedere dal vivo i propri cantanti preferiti.
Il Festival di Sanremo non è solo una vetrina nazionale. Nell’ambito della gara tanti artisti famosi di calibro internazionale nella storia hanno calcato il palco dell’ Ariston: Madonna, gli U2, i Queen, Bruce Springsteen, i Depeche Mode, Paul McCartney e George Harrison dei Beatles, i Dire Straits, Sting, i Duran Duran, gli Oasis, Eminem e tanti altri.
Questo a dimostrazione del fatto che rimane una vetrina importante, un richiamo reale per chi fa musica, per chi ama la musica ma anche per chi semplicemente vuole assistere ad un bello spettacolo.
I detrattori non mancano. C’è chi ritiene l’evento un gran baraccone mediatico e snobba a gran fatica la faccenda. Per poi ritrovarsi solo al bar, circondato da chi parla solo di questo o del proprio partner che insistentemente canticchia il ritornello della sua canzone preferita.
Meglio arrendersi alla sinfonia, lasciarsi travolgere da quest’ondata di note e godere di questo ciclone innocuo che a volte riesce a distogliere l’attenzione dai problemi reali di tutti i giorni.
È anche questo il grande potere della musica. In un momento molto complicato per l’Italia, dove tutto appare nebuloso e per molti versi involuto, mettere giù la mascherina per qualche minuto e cantare a squarciagola una canzone stupida potrebbe avere il merito di regalarci semplicemente qualche minuto dì felicità.
